  • High Research Activity: R1 institutions exhibit a very high level of research activity and per capita research output. This means they invest substantial resources into research and have a large number of faculty and students engaged in research activities.

  • Geographic Distribution: Out of all 50 U.S. states and the national capital, Washington, D.C., only five states do not have an R1-level university. The states without an R1 institution are Alaska, Idaho, South Dakota, Vermont, and Wyoming.

R2: High Research Activity
