Ministry of Cultural Affairs
Ministry of Cultural Affairs is a ministry of the government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, in charge of national museums and monuments; promoting and protecting the arts (visual, plastic, theatrical, musical, dance, architectural, literary, televisual and cinematographic) in Bangladesh and managing the national archives. The Ministry of Culture is also charged with maintaining the Bengali identity.
Department of Public Libraries, Department of Public Libraries is a government department in the Ministry of Culture responsible for government owned public libraries in Bangladesh and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Department of Public Libraries traces its origins to the Public Library in the Dhaka University campus which was established on 22 March 1958 by the government of Pakistan. The Public Library was shifted to its present building in 1977 and opened in 1978.
The Government of Bangladesh established a network of public libraries down to every district and the department of Public Libraries was established in 1983 to manage them. In 2010 the department exchanged material on Bangladesh Liberation war with the National Library of India. Directorate of Archives and Libraries, Directorate of Archives and Libraries is a government department responsible for the management and operations of the National Library and the National Archives in Bangladesh and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is the International Standard Book Number agency in Bangladesh responsible for providing publishers with ISBNs.
Directorate of Archives and Libraries was founded in 1972 by the President of Bangladesh, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. It was placed under the Ministry of Education initially but later placed under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. It was initially located in a rented building and in 1986 it was moved to National Library building which was constructed in 1985. In 2001 Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina laid the foundation to build a building for the Directorate of Archives and Libraries. The purpose-built headquarters were partially completed in 2004 and fully completed in 2012.
